The employees at fire station attached to Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) area went on a hunger strike demanding on time payments, recruitment of more personnel to the force and full bonus. A few hours strike by 27 fire personnel including eight drivers of the MIDC Fire Station for timely payments and other demands, ended after Thane-Belapur Industries Association gave assurances to the protestors. Fire personnel complained that despite being on duty round the clock, they are not given payments on time and there aren’t proper medical facilities for them either. TBIA’s Jt. Secretary Dr. L S Patil however blamed the taxes going to NMMC for their failure of not only giving payments late to fire personnel but also for the lack of equipments and basic requirements of the fore brigade. Further attacking the NMMC, he said that as compared to NMMC Fire Brigades, MIDC’s was better. There are over 160 big and small fire incidents reported every year from the industrial zone having 5,000 factories. For almost every major incident, the MIDC has to depend on Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation’s (NMMC) fire stations in Airoli and Vashi. As the MIDC Fire Brigade does not have latest fire fighting equipments, ambulance and not even enough fire personnel but instead of attending to this, looks like the Thane Belapur Industries Association is playing the blame game of making NMMC responsible for their failures.
