thane-jail-2A rare event was seen at the Central Jail in Thane for its prisoners. Manoj Singh from Thane beings to us a report on how Gandhian values are being imparted to prisoners to reform their characters. Nearly 102 inmates along with staffers of the Thane Central jail appeared for the Gandhi Peace Examinations organised by the Bombay Sarvodaya Mandal. The exams are conducted for prisoners who have passed the seventh standard. The aim of the examination is to bring about change in the life of the inmates and to inculcate qualities of ‘Satya’ and ‘Ahinsa’, preached by the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi. The President of the Bombay Sarvodaya Mandal, T R Somaiya says that even Mahatma Gandhi had gone to jail and hence his ideas and principles brings about a major impact on the thinking of the inmates. The study material, comprising Mahatma Gandhi’s autobiography and other literature is sent to the inmates in advance for self-study and lectures are also held to educate them about Gandhiji’s thoughts. Mahatma Gandhi’s principals of truth and non-violence have always been an inspiration for the country. The inspiration was seen at the Thane jail too where the prisoners and police officials enthusiastically participated. The prisoners were then awarded certificates for their success who shared their experience and expressed that such initiatives is bound to change their thinking. The superintendent of Thane Central Jail said that while such events reforms the attitude of the prisoners, studying the principles of non-violence and tolerance of Gandhiji has a grater impact. He said that felicitating the prisoners teaches them that if they do good even in jail, they will be acknowledged for it. Those inmates who did not appear this time are eager for the second round of examinations. Infact, there is an evident change seen in the inmates who now have a reformed way of talking and interacting with the jailers. From Thane, Manoj Singh for NMTV News.
