President gives nod for ordinance to protect healthcare workers

President of India Ram Nath Kovind has approved an ordinance, 2020, that makes an act against violence on healthcare personnel or damage to property including their living and working premises, cognizable as non bailable offences. This ordinance also provides for compensation for injury and damage to or loss of property in such case.

As doctors and healthcare workers are providing day and night services, conducting door-to-door  visits in affected areas, monitoring quarantined patients and testing people . Chief executive officer of Apollo Telehealth, Vikram Thaploo says that the strong law would deter unruly elements while emboldening healthcare workers and assuring them that their safety is being accorded high priority,


As per ordinance  such violence acts shall be punished with imprisonment of 3 months to 5 years and a fine of ₹50,000 to ₹2,00,000, In serious case of injury, imprisonment term can be for up to 7years, with a fine of ₹1,00,000 to ₹5,00,000.

The ordinance was issued on Wednesday night and came into force “at once” after the Union Cabinet approved it.
