Union Finance Minister Smt Nirmala Sitharaman has announced on March 26, 2020 that the government has provided Rs 34,800 crore financial assistance using digital payment infrastructure to about 39 crore beneficiaries under the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Package (PMGKP) to protect them from the impact of COVID-19 lockdown.
The government has announced cash payment to women and poor senior citizens and farmer and also free food grains as a part of the PMGKP. The Finance Minister said in the statement that the implementation of the package is monitored by central and state government.
On May 5, 2020, it said as the part of package, Rs 16,394 crore has been credited towards paymemt of the first instalment of PM-KISAN to 8.19 crore beneficiaries.
The Ministry said an amount of Rs 10,025 crore has been credited to 20.05 crore (98.33 per cent) women Jan Dhan account holders as first instalment. A sum of Rs 2,785 crore credited to 5.57 crore women Jan Dhan account holders with second instalment.
The National Social Assistance Programme (NSAP) disbursed Rs 1405 crores to about 2.82 crore to old age persons, widow and differently-abled persons, benefits transferred to all 2.812 crore beneficiaries , the ministry added.
The Finance Ministry said that around 2.20 crore buildings and construction workers have received financial support of Rs 3492.57crore. Under the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Ann Yojana 67.65 Lakh MT of foodgrains have been lifted by 36 States/UTs for April 2020. Around 16 LMT of foodgrains have been distributed, covering 60.33 crore beneficiaries by 36 States/UTs for April 2020. About 6 LMT of foodgrains have been distributed, covering 12.39 crore beneficiaries by 22 States/UTs for May 2020
Around 2.42LMT of pulses have been dispatched to various states/UTs, pulses have been distributed to 5.21 crore household beneficiaries out of 19.4crore such
beneficiaries. A total of 5.09 crore Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) cylinders have been booked under this scheme so far around 4.82 crore free cylinder has been already delivered to beneficiaries.
The Financial ministry said that New India Assurance covering 22.12 Lakh health workers and also operationalized Insurance Scheme for Health Workers in Government Hospitals and Health care centres.
