Around 1000 migrants workers protest to go home, Police lathi-charges

The novel coronavirus outbreak has brought the entire country to a complete standstill. Moreover, the country’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the extension of the lockdown commenced by the national government so as to curb and contain the spread of the deadly outbreak.

The lockdown has resulted in the closure of countless companies and industries and also unemployed thousands. As a result, the migrant workers are trying to find a way to leave the state and travel back to their respective hometowns. An official stated that around 1,000 migrant workers and labourers gathered near Rippon hotel at Nagpada, in South Mumbai to demand special trains or any other means of transport to return to their native places.

So in order to pacify the intensity of the situation and to disperse the large crowd, the police equipped with lathis used their force at the protestors. According to the official the situation went out of control. The official also said that most of them had submitted their documents to police for verifications and other formalities.

A video of the police lathicharging the people gathered near the Rippon hotel in order to disperse the heavy crowd was shared on social media. . The train was scheduled from Mumbai Central to Uttar Pradesh the same night.
