33 Maharashtra cops succumb to death due to COVID-19, over 2,560 infected

As due to the outbreak of Coronavirus pandemic 33 Maharashtra police personnel including an officer, have so far died of COVID-19, a police official said on Sunday.

In Maharashtra more than 2,562 police personnel have been tested positive for Coronavirus.

The police official said that “Out of these, 33 personnel, including 18 of the Mumbai Police force, died of the infection,”

However there are 1,497 active cases for COVID-19 in the state police force which includes 196 officers. An official said during the lockdown 260 policemen were assaulted for which 841 people were arrested.

He added in the attack 86 security personnel were injured as well as 45 health personnel were also attacked during the lockdown, under Indian Penal Code Section 188 (disobedience to order duly promulgated by a public servant) police registered 1,23,424 offences.

As during the on-going lockdown, police registered 1,330 offences for illegal transportation due to which over 80,000 vehicles were seized and around 23,866 people were arrested.

The official said that the police have collected the fine worth RS 6.62 crore for various offences, he added during the lockdown personnel at police control room handled over one lakh calls of queries and complaints related to Covid-19.
