NMMC earns over Rs. 7 lakh as fine for flouting COVID-19 lockdown rules

Even as the Unlock 1.0 has paved way for relaxations it has brought upon grave dangers to the society as masses are brazenly violating the mandatory COVID-19 norms, hence proving that social distancing is just not in the DNA of our nation.

Navi Mumbai witnessed the impunity of irresponsible citizens flouting social distancing norms at several places as large number of citizens hit the city streets while beelines of private vehicles threw traffic out of gear.

With the citizens seeming to forget the deadly threats of the prevailing Coronavirus infection, Navi Mumbai has set the alarm bells ringing as virus cases have failed to plunge and new infections are coming to fore at an accelerating pace.

To keep the city’s COVID-19 situation from falling apart further, NMMC is head-on taking the rough approach to bring in tunes the irresponsible citizens, by taking stern action against those who are found to be violating the lockdown rules and other guidelines laid down by the civic body.

In a recent revelation, The NMMC collected a fine of Rs 7,92,000 from the violators.

Despite constant warnings, many have been found flouting COVID-19 rules and Lockdown regulations thereby posing grave threat to oneself and putting at risk the health of other surrounding citizens making many the carriers of the deadly Coronavirus.

In order for the seriousness of COVID-19 to seep into the minds of citizens and make them act accordingly, Navi Mumbai Municipal Commissioner Annasaheb Misal has issued orders to penalize those citizens who are found without masks, roaming in groups and loitering around.

As per details, here is the break-up of the fine collected from city’s various divisions:
Rs. 2,19,000 fine was collected from Belapur division.
Rs. 39,000 was collected by the Nerul division office.
Rs. 56,500  was collected from Vashi division office.
Rs. 2,2,250 was collected from Turbhe division office.
Rs. 93,400 was collected by the Koparkhairane division office.
Rs 31,400 was collected by the Ghansoli division office.
Rs. 1,38, 900 and Rs. 12,300 was collected by the Airoli and Digha division office respectively.

Under the Prevention of Infectious Diseases Act, 1897 enacted for the prevention of the introduction of infectious diseases, following will be the penalty levied in view of violation.

• For non-wearing face mask, handkerchief in public places: Rs. 500
• For spitting in public places such as roads, markets, hospitals, offices: Rs. 1000
• All shopkeepers, fruit vendors, vegetable sellers, all essential commodity sellers etc. as well as consumers must adhere to physical distancing, if violation perceived, a penalty amount of Rs. 200 will be charged.
• If customers, owners, shopkeepers, sellers of such establishments fail to maintain social distancing a fine of   Rs. 2000 will be charged upon them.
• Repeat offenders will be imposed double the fine or face criminal action or both.

For the safety of Navi Mumbaikars, time and again NMMC and it’s leaders have reiterated the importance of social distancing, urging to wear masks regularly and maintain hygiene by sanitizing and soap-washing of hands regularly.

The Navi Mumbai Municipal Commissioner Annasaheb Misal has appealed the masses to stay home and stay safe during the complete duration of the 10-days Lockdown from July 3rd – July 13th, imposed in the NMMC region to break the transmission chain of the Coronavirus.
