Cyber Crime Cases Take Flight Amid COVID-19 Spike In Navi Mumbai

With alarming rise in Coronavirus infections in Navi Mumbai, an upsurge in cyber crime cases has been recorded adding to the city’s lockdown woes.

The usual modus operandi of calling to update the Know Your Customer (KYC) information of mobile wallets and purchasing items online has been used to siphon off lakhs of money in the past one week.

Taking to Twitter, Navi Mumbai Commissioner of Police, IPS Sanjay Kumar has cautioned the citizens of the same urging to be vigil and alert.

“Cyber fraudesters are active again with their time tested MOB OLX or Paytm update. I just reiterate you don’t have to upload any app on instructions of unknow or share OTP while receiving.While paying only you require to send OTP or code. This time targets 21 yr old and 65yr old”

A resident of Seawoods, Mr. Ram Deshpande got a fake fraud call requiring to update Desphande’s KYC.
He was asked to download an app called Quick Support. After he downloaded it and uploaded vital information such as his account number and pin number, Rs. 1.54 lakh were withdrawn from his account.

Alerting the citizens to remain vigil amid growing cyber crime cases in the city, Navi Mumbai Commissioner of Police assured citizens of surveillance in his tweet which stated: “Cyber cell of Navi Mumbai Police is working relentlessly to detect and neutralise the cyber fraudsters, but it takes time to establish and detect the spatial distance of the accused and their digital identity. Awareness is preventive and workable. Please co-operate.”
