ACTION AGAINST CESS DEFAULTERS INCREASES – 71 BANK ACCOUNT FREEZED

pendari 3NMMC has taken legal action against 71 cess defaulters while dozens others face the heat of strict action. DMC Mahaveer Pendhari updated the media about the same in a press conference. 71 defaulters have been booked for criminal charges while many others have been sent notices. NMMC has frozen the bank account of the 71 defaulters. 33 of these came forward and paid the cess taxes while two of the companies namely Mack Springs and Bhasin Springs Pvt. Ltd. which had appealed to the Thane district court against these legal proceedings of NMMC but the High Court ruled in favor of NMMC. It may be recalled that the campaign started by Commissioner Vijay Nahata seems to be paying off as till August 14, 2007 NMMC has earned revenue of 12 Crores 87 lakh in the just the 14 days of the month, while overall it has retrieved RS. 77.19 Crores. However, the sum to be collected is far high compared to this amount, as the defaulters list is to pay NMMC dues of over Rs. 700 Crores since 2001.
