ACTION ON NAVI MUMBAI NEWS REPORT – COMMISSIONER MADHUKAR KOKATE ASSURES STREN ACTION ON THE POOR QUALITY OF WORK AT THANE BELAPUR ROAD

tbelapur-road-1In the case of the concretized Thane Belapur Road developing potholes, Commissioner Madhukar Kokate has assured action against the contractor for the same. It may be recalled that we had aired a report last week that just 5 months after the concretization work of Thane Belapur Road, wherever concretization work has been completed and vehicles are plying, potholes can be seen. At Turbhe Naka, there was a 60 feet deep pothole on the concretized road exposing massive corruption and poor quality of work being done by the NMMC contractor. Navi Mumbai News captured the contractor once again breaking the concretized road and constructing a new one. After inconveniencing motorists and pedestrians for months, the work came to an end and once again the concretized road are being repaired all over again. And this is just not the condition of the concretized roads in Turbhe alone. Navi Mumbai News team traveled from Turbhe to Airoli and throughout one could spot potholes on the concretized road. Evidently when we approached the contractor PBA Infrastructure and SPAN – the company being paid Rs. 3 Crore to supervise the work – both refused to speak to us in the matter. At the sight, even as B K Singh of SPAN tried to give us lame excuses, the Director of the Company R S Gupta arrived and started misbehaving with our team. If there isn’t anything wrong, then why is there a need to loose temper? His anger once again raised speculations about the alleged corruption and apparent compromising of work quality that is being alleged by city motorists. If NMMC was expecting this, then why did it decide to spend Rs. 111 Crores on public funds on concretization of road that has made commuting a nightmare for pedestrians and motorist – be it at Vashi’s main road or any other area alongside the Thane Belapur Road ? Or else, this is yet another expose of the massive corruption in the work that has allegedly led to the contractor comprising on the quality of work. City motorists and pedestrians should be prepared to continue living in the nightmare as the concretization work that should end on 31st May 2007 does not look will end even in mid 2008 considering the snail pace work being done by the contractor. And even after that, there seems to be no guarantee that the ride on the TBR will be a smooth one even as the contractors and politicians will continue to plunder with public money that would be floundered again in the name of repair work of the same roads. When Navi Mumbai News brought this to the attention of NMMC Commissioner Madhukar Kokate, he assured action against the erring contractor.
