Activists protest against the destruction of age old trees for parking lot at Sector 9A in Vashi

NMMC General Body has approved the controversial proposal to built a parking lot between Shiv Vishnu Mandir & Sacred Heart School at Sector 9A, Vashi without one word of debate or discussion. The parking lot has been proposed by local corporator and former Dy. Mayor Avinash Lad. In an interview with NMTV earlier, Avinash Lad had justified the proposal had debated concerns that its the patch is not a green zone and no trees will be cut. Local residents however, differ on this logic.

According to Avinash Lad, the main aim of the proposal is beautification though city activist Rohit Malhotra says its only lootification.

Vikas Sorte, another citizen activist of the city points out that in the past NMMC did a blunder by erecting walls to make boundaries for trees that has reduced the parking space in the area and now it wants to spend nearly a Crore of the tax payers money in creating a new parking space.

Here are the questions and concerns raised by citizens and activists.

NMMC SHOULD HAVE LEARNED FROM SECTOR 16 VASHI’S PARKING LOT

Activists say that NMMC built a parking lot at Sector 16 Vashi which lies unutlized, then has a study been done that the parking lot at Sector 9A, will be of any utility.

EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTES SHOULD PROVIDE PARKING WITH CAMPUS

Since local corporator Avinash Lad said that the educational and religious institutes in the area approached him for a solution, activists say that the responsibility of the same lies on the institutes. Resolving it from the tax payers money isn’t right. BYTES ROHIT MALHOTRA S 04:27 to 05:07 + VIKAS SORTE S 01:45 to 02:44

THIS IS NOT CITIZEN’S DEMAND

They say that this parking lot is definitely not citizens demand.

TREES WILL BE MASSACRED

Activist Rohit Malhotra says that there is no way a parking lot can come without cutting trees.

POROUS GROUND IS NEEDED TO FIGHT HEAVY RAINS

Activists explain that open ground is needed as they are porous.

ENCROACHMENT IS NO EXCUSE FOR CONVERTING GREEN BELT TO CONCRETE PARKING LOT

Another justification that Avinash Lad gave was that there is encroachment happening in the said area, which activists say should be taken action upon by NMMC.

PARKING LOT INCREASES CHANCES OF CRIME & FLOODS

Another major concern by activists is that the parking lot increaes the chances of crimes in the city that can be harbored within the parking lot and even increases the danger of water entering residential societies in the area.

Taking no cues from the Kerala floods, one more green belt of the city is all set to be converted into a concrete structure. On one side, politicians have made planting saplings a publicity stunt, while on the other hand age old trees continue to be massacred in the name of citizens interest. Bureau report – NMTV News.
