When NMMC spent over a thousand crores of tax payers’ money in the name of Morbe Dam, citizens were promised 24 hours water supply. Forget 24 hours, water crisis in Navi Mumbai has become so adverse that citizens aren’t getting even two hours water supply regularly.
It may be recalled that the ruling party had gone into parliamentary and assembly elections with the promise of 24 hours water supply and even managed to win NMMC elections again on these promises that they have failed to keep. The Morbe Dam was purchased in the tenure of first Mayor Sanjeev Naik, an achievement the ruling party always boasts of and later NMMC paid hundreds of crores to Pratibha Industries to lay water pipeline from Digha to Kalamboli.
Despite 1000s of crores spent, the water crisis that Navi Mumbai faces today has forced people to question whether Morbe Dam is NMMC’s own version of the great ‘Irrigation Scam’?
