The 288-member Maharashtra Assembly will go to the polls on October 21 while the results will be declared on October 24. As anticipated, Shiv Sena President Uddhav Thackeray’s son Aditya Thackeray will contest the Assembly elections from Worli in Mumbai.
ADITYA THACKERAY IS FIRST THACKERAY TO CONTEST ANY ELECTIONS
Ever since the Shiv Sena was founded by late Bal Thackeray in 1966, no member of the family had contested any election or held any constitutional post. Uddhav Thackeray’s cousin and MNS Chief Raj Thackeray had announced his intention to contest the 2014 state assembly elections. However, he had later changed his mind. If Aditya wins the election, he will be the first member of the Thackeray family to represent the people. Though; Shalini Thackeray, the wife of Jeetendra Thackeray, a cousin of MNS President Raj Thackeray, had unsuccessfully contested the Lok Sabha Elections 2019.
SHIV SENA IS GUNNING TO MAKE ADITYA THACKERAY FUTURE CHIEF MINISTER OF MAHARASHTRA
The Shiv Sena has been projecting Aditya Thackeray as the Chief Ministerial face if the NDA returns to power after the next month’s assembly polls. Make it sort of official, Uddhav Thackeray recalled the “promise” he had made to his late father Bal Thackeray to install a ‘Shiv Sainik’ (party worker) as the chief minister of Maharashtra. His statement had come against the backdrop of the BJP top brass repeatedly stressing that incumbent Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis would helm the state once again. The Shiv Sena reportedly then stuck to its demand for the deputy chief minister’s post and key portfolios from BJP as part of the seat-sharing arrangement. Insiders said that the BJP has outright refused to agree to the demand of the Dy Chief Minister’s post too. For now it looks, Aditya Thackeray will run for MLA and probably handle one of the key portfolios that the Shiv will get in Fadnavis 2.0.
“JAN ASHIRWAD YATRA” WAS TO OFFICIAL LAUNCH ADITYA THACKERAY TO THE PEOPLE OF MAHARASHTRA
In July, Aaditya had launched a state-wide ‘Jan Ashirwad Yatra’ to thank the electorate for their support in the last Lok Sabha polls and to seek their backing for the upcoming Assembly elections. The main aim of the campaign, insiders say, was to create a mass leader image of 29 years old Aditya Thackeray in the state.
ADITYA THACKERAY AIMS TO WIN MILLENIALS
In the first list of A-B forms that were distributed by Shiv Sena, Aditya Thackeray was on the list. A-B forms are mandatory document to confirm the candidature of a person representing the party. Aditya Thackeray started his public journey by becoming the Yuva Sena President. And has since aimed at connecting with the youth; particularly the millennial whose age category he represents. A BA and LLB, Aditya Thackeray loves poetry since childhood while shares a passion for photography with his Uddhav Thackeray.
RECENT PUBLIC CAMPAIGNS
Aditya Thackeray was instrumental in enforcing plastic ban in Mumbai last year and since the past couple of years, he has been actively campaigning to give Mumbai a 24-hour night-life, starting with non-residential areas, but the move has evoked mixed reactions. He also became the face of saving Aarey forest recently when a proposal was approved to axe trees to build a metro shed.
ADITYA THACKERAY’S DECISION TO CONTEST IS SIGNS OF CHANGING TIME FOR POLITICAL DYNASTIES IN MAHARASHTRA
The Prime Minister Narendra Modi has single handed pulled apart political dynasties in the country evoking sentiments of nationalism like never before. Learning from what was happening from the Gandhis and Pawars of politics, political pundits say that the Thackerays are trying to save the future prospects of the Thackeray family, which also represent a political dynasty. The power that Balasaheb Thackeray remote controlled sitting in Matoshree in his times was an era that can never come back. To ensure that brand Thackeray stays relevant in coming times, the Shiv Sena’s only option is to directly launch Aditya Thackeray in the political fray.
