Airoli MLA Sandeep Naik convinces state to set up new CETP to tackle pollution in Navi Mumbai

#BigDecisionToBringBigRelief #Pollution #NaviMumbai

Pollution is one of the biggest issues that haunts Navi Mumbai today. Built next to a chemical belt, citizens of Koperkhairane, Vashi and Ghansoli remain most affected due to untreated hazardous chemical waste being dumped into creeks and sea while air pollution is causing every kind of respiratory diseases to citizens. For the first time perhaps Airoli MLA Sandeep Naik has forced the state to take strong cognisance of the issue as he raised the same in the on-going Maharashtra legislature’s assembly session’s half hour debate.

“UNTREATED HAZARDOUS CHEMICAL WASTE BEING DUMPED IN SEA, AIR POLLUTION IS ON THE RISE”
Airoli MLA Sandeep Naik, while raising the issue in the assembly said that pollution is the only reason Navi Mumbai could not become the most liveable city. He added that MIDC’s negligence has been responsible for water and air pollution.

“NO SCIENTIFIC APPROACH AS MIDC CONVERTS CHEMICAL UNITS INTO RESIDENTIAL”
A major threat to health of citizens, especially senior citizens and children is the new trend where MIDC has permitted sick chemical units to turn into residential homes. He said that chemical industries take advantage of monsoons to leave untreated hazardous waste into creeks.

“CANCER AND TB ON THE RISE”
The MLA said that over the years, pollutants have entered the food chain while cancer and TB has been on the rise.

“MIDC CETP DYSFUNCTIONAL”
Airoli MLA Sandeep Naik informed the state that the MIDC CETP plant is dysfunctional and hence air and water pollution are affecting lives and health of citizens, more. He said that MIDC and MPCB always, push blame on each other. And demanded to know if MIDC will repair the lines that carry hazardous waste and have become redundant? He demanded a decision on CETP as well.

STATE MINISTER ASSURES AIR POLLUTION LEVELS WILL BE CHECKED AGAIN
In his reply, State Minister Sanjay Bhegade accepted that pipelines leakage is leading to pollution, hence MPCB has written to MIDC to replace pipelines. He added that going by the feedback of the MLA, air pollution levels will be rechecked across Navi Mumbai.

CIDCO, MIDC & NMMC TO JOINTLY BUILD NEW CETP IN NAVI MUMBAI
The most significant outcome of the debate was the announcement of the Minister that a new CETP for Vashi to Koperkhairane will be built jointly by MIDC, NMMC and CIDCO. On Airoli MLA Sandeep Naik’s insistence to give a date for the meeting, the Minister said that a meeting for the same will be called within one week after the monsoon session ends.

It’s unfortunate that such a crucial decision has been taken almost at the end of the present government’s tenure as all work are going to be delayed between the awaited code of conduct and formation of new government. Had Airoli MLA Sandeep Naik or Belapur MLA Manda Mhatre taken up this issue, when they were elected, Navi Mumbai citizens would have already got a relief from life-threatening pollution levels. Nonetheless, Airoli MLA Sandeep Naik’s new avatar of going after the government to get concrete decisions on people’s issues in Navi Mumbai is both appreciation-worthy and more than welcome.
