No other leader of Congress in Maharashtra have had it as easy as two candidates : Amit Deshmukh and Dheeraj Deshmukh. Sons of late Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh, Amit Deshmukh is the Congress candidate from Latur city while Dheeraj Deshmukh is the candidate from Latur rural.
This is Dheeraj Deshmukh’s debut election. 39 years old Dheeraj has contested from the rural constituency, while his elder brother and two-time MLA Amit contested from the city. Dhiraj was a major hit on the campaign trail, with his oratory, body language and mannerisms resembling his father’s.
The Shiv Sena that got the Latur rural seat in seat-swapping arrangement with BJP had pit lightweight Sachin Deshmukh who had one of the weakest election campaign. Sachin Deshmukh runs a number of educational institutes. When questioned about this during his campaigning, citing health issues, he blamed the media for taking him on while going easy on questioning Dheeraj Deshmukh. Even the BJP candidate Shailesh Lahoti against Amit Deshmukh is said to be a weak one that made the polls an easy win for both brothers.
No top leaders of BJP and Shiv Sena either campaigned in Latur. Nor did they try to pacify the brewing rebellion in the party. The top leadership of both, admitted off the record that they are aware of the ground situation in favour of the Deshmukh brothers in Latur, hence no top leader campaigned in Latur nor was much attention paid to the prospects of their chances there.
In a major embarrassment for Shiv Sena in Latur rural, voters voted more for “’None of the Above” (NOTA) more than they voted for their candidate Sachin Deshmukh. As for Dheeraj Deshmukh, he lived up to expectations placed in him as he registered a handsome victory margin of 107166 votes. The final score sheet is as follows :
Congress’ Dhiraj Deshmukh : 135006
NOTA (None of the Above) : 27500
Shiv Sena’s Sachin Deshmukh : 13524
On the other hand in Latur City, the results are as follows :
Congress’ Amit Deshmukh : 110443
BJP’s Shailesh Lahoti :70276
Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi’s Rajasab Maniyar : 24454
The newly-elected Maharashtra Assembly will now get a pair of brothers — Amit Deshmukh and Dhiraj Deshmukh — who will carry forward the legacy of their father, late Vilasrao Deshmukh. Bollywood actor Riteish Deshmukh, son of the late former Maharashtra chief minister, took to Twitter on Thursday to congratulate his brothers. His tweet read, “We did it PAPPA!!! @AmitV_Deshmukh wins Latur (city) by 42000+ votes for the 3rd consecutive time. @MeDeshmukh wins Latur (rural) by 1,20,000 votes. Thank you people of Latur for this faith & trust.” The tweet was accompanied by a picture of him dressed in a white kurta-pajama and looking intently into the distance. Another photo showed the three brothers during campaigning. Vilasrao Deshmukh, who was chief minister between 1999-2003 and 2004-2008, nurtured his home district Latur in central Maharashtra during his decades-long political career. And there is no doubt, Amit and Dhiraj Deshmukh’s victory would have made their father super proud. #ZebaWarsia – NMTV News.
