Angry commuters torch police vehicle, pelt stone over stalling of a train at Diva station in Mumbai

The stalling of a train at Diva station on Central line in Mumbai, and the subsequent traffic disruption turned ugly after commuters squatted on the tracks and blocked all four lines on Friday morning.

The incident took place after a pantograph of a local train going towards Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus broke near Thakurli station at 7:00 am, near Kalyan, in Thane district.

A lathicharge by police to remove squatters turned violent as angry passenger torched police vehicle and pelted stones on railway property at Diva station.

There was report of arson in the nearby shanties adjoining the line though it could not be confirmed.

“All four lines have been defunct due to the agitation since 9 am.” said Central Railwayofficials.

To pacify the crowd and get traffic to resume, local politicians have been called in at the Diva stationspot.
