And another slab collapsed at a flat in JN 1 type apartments in Vashi highlighting yet once again the need for redevelopment of these dilapidated buildings. JN-1 and JN-2 buildings are sitting on the disaster to happen at Sector-10, Vashi. In one of the JN-1 building a slap collapsed on a senior citizen while she was sleeping. The incident has sent panic through the residents of the society. According to them such incidents are now occurring on day-to-day basis due to dilapidation. These buildings were built in 1984 by the CIDCO. There are total 12 buildings in JN-1 and 42 buildings in JN-2. In JN-1 out of 12, 5 buildings are of Central Security Force and 3 of them are standing vacant due to its worst setting. The condition of these buildings is apparent as you can see that wires are entangled, rods have come out moreover; in some of the buildings cracks from outside are clearly visible. The plaster hasn’t been done for last so many years. Till date 5 committees have been formed to study the condition, and with no wonder all these committees had claimed that these buildings might collapse any time soon. The local corporator informed us more on this. In rainy season, leakages give nightmares to these residents. Many have left the rooms due to fear of life, and those who can’t afford are living under the shadow of death. Some of the residents vent out their anger on the circumstances they have to live under: Though Excise Minister Ganesh Naik has given promise in past that the new building would be erected soon, but probably these buildings may not await that long as they are standing on their last leg.
