Its bonanza time for Maharashtra farmers. With an eye on the forthcoming state assembly elections, the state government is drafting another debt waiver scheme of Rs 300 crore to cover three lakh farmers. The state has once again come up with a famer’s loan waiver scheme. This time it is for those farmers who were left out of the central government’s Rs 71,600-crore mega debt waiver scheme last year since they were regularly re-paying bank loans. The Centre’s scheme benefited only defaulters. It was accused of punishing farmers repaying their debt regularly. Now, the state wants to help them. The scheme that is being drafted now will benefit those farmers whose total loan amount is more than Rs 20,000. The new scheme also includes farmers whose loans have been rescheduled. Sources in the co-operative sector said the scheme is likely to be announced within a fortnight considering that the model code of conduct for the assembly elections is expected to be announced soon after that. The state is already implementing its own debt waiver and debt relief scheme of Rs 6,208 crore in addition to the Centre’s scheme. Bureau report – NMTV News.
