In a meeting called by the merchants, the APMC’s Grains Market has decided to observe a one-day bandh on April 12, 2006. The merchants of APMC have been protesting the VAT or the Value Added Tax. In a meeting recently called by the merchants at the market, it was decided that the grains market would observe a bandh on April 12, 2006. Merchants and traders from all over the state will participate in the bandh and decide the future course of action that they want to take on VAT’s implementation. The Center has imposed VAT from April 1. The bone of contention for traders is that the state governments of neighboring states like Gujarat and MP are yet to impose VAT, then why has the Maharashtra state implemented VAT for merchants and traders of the state. They say that the government should exempt a few items from VAT and despite several appeals and suggestions on this, the state has still not responded. The merchants and traders of the state are going to meet the Chief Minister this week to bring about a solution to this problem.
