Nearly 90% of smartcard validating machines used by BEST bus conductors are non-functional, leading to a daily loss of Rs 10 lakh, BEST committee members have alleged. This revelation was made at a BEST panel meeting by Shiv Sena-BJP members. Panel member Dilip Patel said that since the validating machines were non functional, commuters were using the same smart cards beyond their expiry dates while BEST has no machinery to check these cards within BEST buses. Dilip Patel alleged that the BEST management had not taken action against the machine supplier. He alleged that if BEST rectifies the machines to check cards and passes, BEST would immediately have an additional revenue of Rs. 10 lakhs per day. BEST GM O P Gupta said that it was incorrect to say that the loss was as high as Rs. 10 lakhs everyday unless there was a report on it. He however accepted that commuters were using smart cards beyond expiry dates. He added that BEST officials will review the machines and prepare an action report.
