Bianca Andreescu stunned the world by winning the U.S. Open. On the incredible stage of the U.S Open women’s singles final, the 19-year-old from the Toronto suburbs took down the most daunting opponent in the sport, pulling off a remarkable straight-sets win (6-3, 7-5) that makes her the first Canadian to win a Grand Slam singles title. When the performance was over and she had survived a furious rally from her legendary opponent, the Canadian dropped her racquet in disbelief. After a quick hug, she collapsed on her back in the middle of the court. It had been a brave, fearless display of tennis, with Andreescu repeatedly blasting balls deep into the court, forcing the most powerful player in women’s tennis to play defence. Williams had lost only three services games in six matches at the U.S. Open. Andreescu broke her serve six times during the game.
WHO IS BIANCA ANDREESCU?
Bianca is the daughter of Romanian immigrants to Canada. Bianca’s parents – Maria Andreescu and Nicu Andreescu – originally immigrated to Canada from Romania in 1994. She returned to her native country at the age of 6 with her mom while her dad stayed behind in Canda. The mother-daughter duo returned to Canada permanently a few years later for the better good. Bianca rose to fame with her phenomenal rise in year 2019. However, it is not just Andreescu in her family who has caught the media attention but her mother Maria Andreescu is also becoming a celebrity in her own right. Maria became the talk of the town with her dressing style during the US Open. Andreescu describes her mother as “the coolest person” she knows.
“IT’S ALL ABOUT FOCUS DURING THE MOST CHALLENGING MOMENTS”
Andreescu credits her parents, specially her mother, for her success at such early stage. The 19-year-old maintains that she learned how to stay calm in important moments from meditating, something that her mother taught her at a very young age. In the epic showdown against Williams, Andreescu looked extremely focused and as cool as cucumber against the G.O.A.T (Greatest of All Time) Serena Williams and that’s because she knows how to control her mind.

STREET IN HOMETOWN CANADA NAMED AFTER BIANCA ANDREESCU
The accolades and recognition keep on coming for the Canadian tennis champion. After winning the US open this past weekend, Andreescu has already made multiple appearances on cable network shows and earned more from the win alone than she had in her entire career up to this point. Now, the Ontario native’s hometown of Mississauga is officially naming a street after her: Andreescu Way. The decision was made by city council this week, and later tweeted by Mayor Bonnie Crombie, who said the decision was part of a “productive first day back.”
IS SHE A ONE-SLAM WONDER?
The women’s game is so powerful and the schedule so punishing that, other than Serena Williams, there hasn’t been a back-to-back Grand Slam champion since Kim Clijsters in 2009 and 2010 at the U.S. Open, although Osaka won the U.S. Open last year and followed up the next Grand Slam with the Aussie Open title in 2019. But since then, Osaka split with her coach and has struggled to cope with all the attention. Going back to 2000, only two players – Williams and Angelique Kerber have won three or more majors. Since 2000, there have been five multiple winners of the Grand Slams, but also 10 champions who never were able to repeat. It will take some time before the tennis world finds out how Andreescu copes with all the attention and whether she can stay injury free for any length of time.
For now, Bianca’s victory at the US Open is huge as it came against the 23-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams. Bianca showed nerves of steel while facing the former world No. 1 to make sure the first time was her time. For playing against a player of a stature like Serena Williams, Andreescu looked extremely confident and it was rather the American who seemed to be under immense pressure. With her 6-3, 7-4 win over Williams, Andreescu penned one of the most amazing stories in tennis to become a household name among the tennis fans. #ZebaWarsia – NMTV News.
