BJP THREATENS PRIVILEGE MOTION AGAINST CHIEF MINISTER OVER MNS HELP IN COUNCIL POLLS

mcgm-1The victory of three Congress nominees and one Congress-backed candidate in the recent legislative council polls seems to have become a new headache for Chief Minister Ashok Chavan. Now, the BJP plans to bring a breach of privilege motion against the Chief Minister for using the suspension of four Maharashtra Navnirman Sena legislators as a “tool” to win the council polls. It is widely believed that the Congress was helped by independent MLAs and smaller parties such as the MNS in the council polls. MNS Chief Raj Thackeray himself made it clear that the MNS MLAs had voted for the Congress-NCP nominees to get the suspension of four MLAs revoked. The statement not only embarrassed the state Congress President Manikrao Thakre who had promptly distanced the Congress from the MNS after the polls, but has also put Chief Minister Ashok Chavan in a spot of trouble. Now, the BJP is objecting to the revocation of suspension being used a tool, though the party is not against the suspension being revoked. BJP has said that the party would move a breach of privilege motion against the Chief Minister during the monsoon session in July. Political observers feel the breach of privilege motion, though unlikely to get passed, is being exploited by the BJP for gains in the soon to be elections in Bihar. Not even the BJP thinks that the breach of privilege motion will be passed. But the issue will stay on in the public memory and media and might work in favour of the BJP in Bihar and UP elections.
