BMC MULLS CASH REWARD FOR SAVING WATER

bmc-cash-rewardRealising that merely appealing to the public’s sense of civic responsibility will not work, civic corporators have now mooted the idea of providing monetary rewards to those who save water. After months of trying to create awareness about the water shortage in the city, the corporators have proposed that incentives – in the form of rebate in property/water taxes and cash or certificates – be given to housing societies and individuals who save water. Ravindra Waikar, BMC standing committee chairman, said that the have run campaigns and advertisements in newspapers to make citizens aware of the water shortage and the necessity to save the precious commodity. But the response has been lukewarm. The civic body hopes that giving incentives might motivate people to save water. While preparing water bills, BMC officials can compare it with earlier bills and see how much the society has cut its usage.
