Centre mulls life term for milk adulterers

NEW DELHI: The Centre today told the Supreme Court that it has appointed a committee to recommend amendment in Food Safety and Standard Act to make the offence of milk adulteration punishable with life imprisonment.

In an affidavit filed by department of health and family welfare, the government said that as per the direction of the apex court it is considering to make harsher penal provision for offence of milk adulteration.

It said that a committee has been appointed under the secretary of National Disaster Management Authority to look into the issue. The committee is supposed to complete the task by end of February.

Expressing concern over milk adulteration in the country, the apex court had asked the Centre and states to provide harsher punishment of up to life imprisonment to people indulging in production and marketing of spurious milk.

Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal and Odisha have so far made the offence punishable with life imprisonment.
