CITY DRAINAGE, TRANSPORT AND RISING SEA LEVELS COULD SPELL DOOM FOR THE CITY – WARNS NOBEL PRIZE WINNER DR. R. K. PACHAURI

Dr.R.K.Pachauri-3If you were convinced that the 26/7 deluge was the once in a blue moon cases for the city and much has been done to face another day of heavy rains and flooding, think again. The man who has compelled many to do so is nothing short of an authority on the subject – Dr. R K Pachauri, the chief of Nobel prize winning body Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change who was in the city to talk at a forum organized by the International Advertising Association. During his speech on climate change, he urged that climate change has important implications such as increase in precipitating events. Dr Rajendra K. Pachauri, an Indian born scientist who leads the United Nations Intergovernmental panel shares the 2007 Noble Prize for peace with Al Gore on Climate Change for its work to alert the world to the threat of global warming. Speaking to NMTV News on the effects of global warming on this city, Dr. R. K. Pachauri said that huge quantity of rainfall in short time, heat waves or increase in sea level are factors that will threaten this city. Adaptation and putting strategies in place is the only solution, he emphasized. Dr. Pachauri appealed to citizens to take up a revamp of the drainage network, in keeping with the rising sea levels across the world. He said that for this city, there is an urgent need for improved public transport systems as well. Addressing the gathering at the a forum organized by the International Advertising Association Dr. Pachauri asked everyone to join hands and spread the message for climate change was no longer just a scientific theory. Quoting from the IPCC’s fourth assessment report, he said at the rate we were going, the earth would witness a further warming of 1.8 degrees Celsius to 4 degrees Celsius in the 21st century. It’s a process leading to disaster, he added. Being one of the cities to be affected by this during an early stage, the economy too will take a beating. During the event Dr. Pachauri gave a presentation with details on global advertising expenditure for emission control. He stressed on the need of advertisers to initiate advertising campaigns and act as change agents in curbing climate changes and global warning. Dr. Pachuari’s message was clear – for cities like Mumbai its time we became the change we want to see; lest there is no escaping another 26/7. With Alok Pagare, Zeba Warsia for NMTV News.
