One of the most talked about constituencies in the Maharashtra State Assembly Elections 2019 has been Belapur constituency. Shiv Sena was hopeful that they would get the constituency in exchange of the Airoli constituency that went to BJP when Sandeep Naik entered the party and the Chief Minister guaranteed him BJP candidature from Airoli. But all logics were revised when Ganesh Naik entered the BJP with all his corporators. Considering that the BJP was being gifted the last NCP ruled municipal corporation ‘NMMC’; many vouched that Ganesh Naik would be given BJP candidature from Belapur. But on October 1 all hell broke loose for the Naiks as Manda Mhatre was repeated as the BJP candidate from Belapur while Ganesh Naik was not given any candidature at all.
THE AFTERMATH OF GIVING CANDIDATURE TO MANDA MHATRE FROM BELAPUR
BJP party-men from bottom up have been saying for the last 3 years that Manda Mhatre wouldn’t be given candidature as she had ‘disappointed’ the party leadership and failed to grow the party in Navi Mumbai, particularly Belapur. On the other hand, Shiv Sena Dy Leader Vijay Nahata has openly criticized her performance as MLA.
In this interview in August 2018, NMTV had also posed the question to him if he would work for Manda Mhatre if there was ‘yuvti’, to which he had voiced confidence that there won’t be any yuvti.
The mindset of Vijay Nahata was obvious. They were confident that there won’t be yuvti and they would never have to work for BJP’s Manda Mhatre as a candidate.
DISSENT PREVAILS IN SHIV SAINIKS
The dissent among Shiv Sainiks in Navi Mumbai on failing to get candidature in both constituencies is openly being seen on ground in Belapur constituency and specifically at grass root workers. The same is also translating into considerable support to Shiv Sena rebel candidate from Belapur constituency Vijay Mane. Shiv Sena’s Shahar Pramukh or City Chief, he filed his nomination as an independent candidate from Belapur when Vijay Nahata was denied candidature. In an interview with NMTV, Vijay Mane spoke on why he rebelled to contest these polls.
In closed door conversations, Shiv Sainiks say that they are deeply hurt as Vijay Nahata was working in Belapur for nearly 8 years now and last 3 years very aggressively. So they will either not vote for BJP or vote against BJP.
CM’S “SURVEY” POST POLLS WILL FORCE BJP AND SHIV SENA TO WORK FOR MANDA MHATRE
Besides Shiv Sainiks in Navi Mumbai, the new entrants of BJP are also under the scanner in Belapur. Corporators of Ganesh Naik camp who recently defected to BJP are not keen to work for Manda Mhatre. Until now candidature announcement, they were confident that they would be working for Ganesh Naik in Belapur but overnight turn of events has brought them face to face in a situation where they have to raise slogans to vote for Manda Mhatre, their leader Ganesh Naik’s hardcore rival. Ironically, these very corporators were waiting for these polls to avenge Ganesh Naik’s last defeat by Manda Mhatre. However, rebellion or working against BJP in Belapur won’t be smooth sailing, as according to reports, the Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has called for a survey of Belapur constituency post the polls and based on this ward-wise survey, BJP is going decide candidatures for NMMC polls 2020. BJP Navi Mumbai President Ramchandra Gharat is however confident that all Shiv Sena and new BJP entrants will work for Manda Mhatre in the polls.
There are reports that officials from the BJP central leadership and state leadership are already stationed across constituencies including Belapur and all work and political development is being closed monitored. Sources say that be it call records, conversations or movements – all are under scanner.
THE BATTLE IS FOR RECORD MARGIN
Political pundits however believe despite the challenges, Manda Mhatre’s win from Belapur is inevitable as voters see only Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s face when they vote. The only challenge for Manda Mhatre remains the percentage of votes she garners. More so as Belapur constituency with 17 candidates, is the highest number of candidates in Navi Mumbai’s four constituencies – Airoli, Belapur, Panvel & Uran. In Belapur, three candidates will challenge the percentage of voting that BJP Shiv Sena garners – Shiv Sena rebel Vijay Mane, NCP Congress candidate Ashok Gawde and MNS candidate Gajanan Kale. The MNS candidate’s entire campaign is targeted against Manda Mhatre and BJP.
The BJP is however not perturbed by any of this. Ramchandra Gharat says that whether Airoli or Belapur, they will win both with record margins. #ZebaWarsia – NMTV News.
