CONGRESS MP MILIND DEORA URGES CENTRE TO SCRAP SALTPAN PROJECT IN CITY

milind-devraCity Congress MP Milind Deora has urged the Union government to stop the government in Maharashtra in its tracks and prevent the release of 5,500 acres of saltpan lands for real estate exploitation. In a letter to Union minister of state for environment Jairam Ramesh, City Congress MP Milind Deora described the state government’s move as “dangerous.” He said the release of these vast tracts of land will make the city more vulnerable to floods during the monsoon. According to him, saltpans function like balancing chambers and absorb excess rainwater. But by developing these lands, the city, which was affected during the July 2006 deluge, will be hit even more. Deora noted that the existing stormwater drain network in the metropolis was inadequate and the release of saltpan lands will only add to the city’s woes. Union minister of state for communications Gurudas Kamat was the first MP from Mumbai to oppose the release of saltpans. He had taken up the matter with prime minister Manmohan Singh. With Deora joining the protest, the Ashok Chavan government may find it difficult to push through the proposal. The release of vast tracts of land will make the city more vulnerable to floods.
