There is some good news for citizens of the country who have been fighting against criminalization of politics.
The government of India is planning to bring about a new amendment in the “The Representation of The People Act” that will bar persons accused in serious crimes or have been charged by trial courts from entering legislatures.
It has been seen in the last few elections, that criminals have been taking advantage of the loopholes in the current act to contest elections and enter the legislature. But with the new amendment not just accused but even those who are convicts with cases pending in higher courts will be barred from contesting elections.
Once again, the decision has raised hopes of arresting the growing criminalization of politics.
