Currency ban may lead to washout of Winter session of Parliament

The month-long winter session of Parliament appears heading for a washout. The Opposition dug the heels in a joint meeting on Monday on the demonetisation, declaring “no JPC (Joint Parliamentary Committee), no Parliament” and the Government rejected its demand for Prime Minister Modi to reply, making it clear that only Finance Minister Arun Jaitley will reply in both the Houses.

While both the Houses remained paralysed on the fourth day of the session on Monday, the train accident killing over 146 on Sunday added fuel to fire as the Opposition protested why Modi in Agra did not rush to the mishap spot in Kanpur and drowned a statement on it by junior railway minister Rajen Gohain with noisy scenes in the Rajya Sabha on the cabinet minister not turning up.

Speaker Sumitra Mahajan continued the question hour in the Lok Sabha despite pandemonium, adjourning the House at noon and then for the day at 2 pm, even while the Rajya Sabha went through a series of adjournments until deputy chairman P J Kurien called it the day at 3 pm.
