Divya Gaikwad the next NMMC Standing Committee Chairman?

The NCP is going to nominate its next Chairman for NMMC Standing Committee this month. The standing committee is the key to NMMC treasury and anyone who dons the role of becoming its Chair gets to play the crucial role of ensuring that tax payers’ money is spent on areas that is most needed. And being the assembly elections year, who gets to be the Chairman is often a decision taken by NCP keeping in mind its impact on the elections itself, both in Belapur and Airoli.

DIVYA GAIKWAD IS THE FRONT RUNNER
As speculations begin on who could be the next Chairperson, Divya Gaikwad’s name has emerged as the front runner. A firebrand NCP corporator, Divya Gaikwad is a strong, educated woman’s face that NCP boasts off in NMMC. Despite being a first time corporator, she has overshadowed many debut and senior corporators for taking up the right public issues at the right time and her popularity thus goes beyond her own ward.

DIVYA GAIKWAD WILL ENSURE NCP’S DOMINANCE OVER A ROBUST ADMINISTRATION
If she is appointed NMMC Standing Committee Chairman, not only will she have unanimous support of her colleagues in NCP but she also will ensure that the administration does not try to overshadow or ignore what NCP needs executed ahead of assembly elections.

NOT NOTES BUT VOTES MATTER
NMMC Standing Committee Chairman is often seen as a post to churn in money but in the present day, it’s not the notes but votes that matter. Especially in city areas where educated middle class citizens want a non-corrupt, dedicated transparent and work-performance oriented leadership. And it’s this gap that Divya Gaikwad can successfully fill between the middle class voters and NCP in Navi Mumbai.

OTHER CONTENDERS FOR THE POST
And while on merit, Divya Gaikwad is the top contender of the post, other members are also trying to push their candidature for the crucial post. The newly nominated Ravindra Ithape, Dr Jiyaji Nath and Navin Gavte are also trying to lobby for the post.

“NCP LEADERS PARTIAL TOWARDS RAVINDRA ITHAPE TO ENSURE HE DOES NOT REBEL AGAIN” SAY NCP SOURCES
NCP sources say that giving the post to the controversial Ravindra Ithape will not go down well within NCP itself as ahead of last municipal elections, Ravindra Ithape had almost quit the NCP party to join BJP. The NCP had to get pressure from senior leadership and reportedly from with Ithape’s family to ensure he does not rebel. In the last 5 years, to keep Ithape happy, the NCP leadership has allowed him a free hand to bring proposals for his ward that run into over a 100 Crores. NCP corporators who speak on condition of anonymity say that their leader is partial towards Ravindra Ithape to keep him happy. So while he is also a top contender, appointing him will backfire for NCP ahead of assembly polls.

DR NATH LACKS AGGRESSION WHILE NAVIN GAVTE IS EMBROILED IN DIGHA ILLEGAL CONSTRUCTION CASES
Even though Dr Jiyaji Nath is one of the senior most corporators in NMMC, he does not have the needed aggression. Not to forget that he has enjoyed one term as Standing Committee Chairman during which the controversial NMMC Fortis deal was signed. Navin Gavte’s candidature too has opposition from NCP party itself as his name is directly embroiled in the illegal construction cases at Digha. For these reasons the non-corrupt, honest and clean image of Divya Gaikwad has emerged as NCP’s best bet for the lucrative post of NMMC Standing Committee Chairperson in the year of Vidhan Sabha Elections 2019.
