prawns--3Situated 6 kms ahead of Panvel, the Owla Village is famous for freshwater prawn farms. Shailendra Upadhyay and Dyaneshwar Mali traveled to the village to meet farmers who make a living from these farms. Freshwater prawn farms are rare aquaculture businesses designed to raise and produce freshwater prawn for human consumption. But Arun Patil of Owla Village, 6 kms ahead of Panvel makes a living on this rare business. On the lines of rice cultivation, even prawns cultivation requires first drying, then creating the harvesting continues. Arun Patil explains that calcium is then added in the pond that helps developing the sand to standards needed for prawn’s cultivation and then the seeds are sown. In a period of three to four months one can see kin prawns. For the cultivation of prawns in farms, nearly 50, 000 seeds are sown in an area of 2.5 acre harvesting area that helps cultivate 1200 to 1300 prawns. Farmers at Ovla villages cultivate prawns twice every year and are sold to companies exporting prawns. With cameraperson Dyaneshwar Mali, Shailendra Upadhyay for NMTV News.
