It was in 2012 that the Central railways had first mooted an AC train for the city. The proposal is expected to come to life as the CR would be starting the city’s first fully air-conditioned suburban rake-also the country’s first-by April end and the train is likely to be trialled on CR’s Harbour line.
Railway minister Suresh Prabhu tweeted about the update. ”One AC EMU rake has been allotted to Central Railway, will improve passenger experience in Mumbai. We are constantly endeavouring to improve services.”
Sources said that the one-way ticket fare on an AC train could be 20-40% more than the existing first class tariff . The monthly pass could, however, be around six to eight times the price of a first class season ticket, they added.
