State Forest Minister Babanrao Pachpute made some shocking remarks in front of an audience of foreign bankers and tourists about how the tree plantation drives of the state are just an eye wash and publicity stunts. A subject that should have been an issue of concern in closed door meetings was instead a joke for the Minister or so it seemed. This was an event that marked a public – private initiative to make a mangrove wetland center. The audience had tourists and the dais – guests, which included the Dy. Chief Executive Officer of HSBC India Neelesh Heredia. The bank has come forward to finance the initiative of the state to build a mangrove wetland center. And addressing this gathering, the Chief Guest for the event State Forest Minister Babanrao Pachpute made some outrageous remarks about how the government fools the citizens of this state. Babanrao Pachpute said that their department specializes in planting trees in one spot, clicking snaps and then the next year again planting green heads in the same spot. When the representative of the foreign bank did not understand what the Minister said in Marathi, the Minister translated it in Hindi for him and had a good laugh with the audience. It was not only foolish of the Minister to accept the flaws of the state system but unfortunate that he thought the subject of the state fooling its people was a subject to joke about in public. The Minister not only proved that they have failed in doing justice to environmental concerns but also that the state was never serious about it in the first place.
