Ganesh Naik Says Will Sweep Next Elections : Confidence Or Arrogance?

Ganesh Naik : 2009
In 2009, Ganesh Naik created history. His son Sanjeev Naik won parliamentary polls and became Thane MP. It was a record as he defeated Shiv Sena in its fort Thane. Later the same year, Ganesh Naik himself won Belapur assembly constituency against BJP-Shiv Sena’s Suresh Haware while his younger son Sandeep Naik won from Airoli constituency against Shiv Sena BJP candidate Vijay Chougule. The streak of creating history continued and under Ganesh Naik, NCP won NMMC polls in 2010 with his nephew Sagar Naik becoming Mayor. That was the years of glory for Ganesh Naik. Within the Naik family were a cabinet Minister, MP, MLA and Mayor. Fast forward into

Ganesh Naik : 2014
2014 – Sanjeev Naik lost the MP elections, Ganesh Naik lost MLA elections while Sagar Naik did not even contest civic polls. Sandeep Naik’s victory thus became the only saving grace for Ganesh Naik. Even that was questioned when NCP won NMMC elections in 2015 but with a huge setback of defeats in Airoli.

Ganesh Naik : 2017
Defeated, weak and glory lost are some of the words that are often used to describe Ganesh Naik at the moment. Rivals don’t leave any chance to remind the city of all promises that Ganesh Naik made and never fulfilled : from 24 hours water supply to pollution free Navi Mumbai to 2.5 FSI. Worst still were the demolition of glass house at Belapur and orders to demolish Bhavkaleshwar temple that has further exposed how Ganesh Naik made a mockery of laws and misused his power as cabinet Minister. Leaders who never came close to the political might of Ganesh Naik now openly challenge him. Thane MP Rajan Vichare, Thane Guardian Minister Eknath Shinde, BJP MLA Manda Mhatre, NMMC Opposition Leader Vijay Chougule to even Shiv Sena corporator Kishor Patkar – no one misses a chance to hit out at Ganesh Naik. His own corporators are critical of his leadership and are often seen questioning Ganesh Naik’s dictatorship ways behind his back. His public appearances are limited and there aren’t any landmark projects or public works that Ganesh Naik can boast off when he goes to people for vote in the next elections. Despite this ground reality, Ganesh Naik speech early this month has stunned everyone. His entire speech had an air of arrogance and pride. Whether it was when he pointed out that he chooses the Mayor of Navi Mumbai.Or when he lashed out at NCP corporators for calling his speeches “pravachans”. Or when he blamed the media for speculating who will be next Mayor.

All speeches were far from any humility that a great leader displays in public. In fact in this address to party workers, Ganesh Naik declared that they will sweep the next elections. With utmost confidence he told corporators to write what he is saying.

The last time Ganesh Naik exuberated this confidence was during the Sharad Pawar rally prior to assembly polls in 2014. In that rally too Ganesh Naik had announced that Sandeep Naik and himself would win the polls.

However assembly elections results proved that the announcement Ganesh Naik made was not confidence but perhaps arrogance. Now once again in the address to party workers, Ganesh Naik says he will sweep next elections. Having heard Ganesh Naik’s speech during this party workers meet, there is but one million dollar question : Is this his confidence or is it Ganesh Naik’s arrogance again? Only if Sanjeev Naik wins the next parliamentary polls, Sandeep Naik retains Airoli for a third consecutive term and Ganesh Naik returns with a victory in Belapur assembly, will it silence Ganesh Naik’s critics. And if at all the Naik defeats continue into 2019 polls, then history will write off Ganesh Naik as that leader of Navi Mumbai who failed his people with his arrogance, ego and pride.
