Gas leak kills over 100 birds and 76 simians from an industrial unit located in Patalganga

Over 100 birds and 76 simians reportedly perished after gas leaked from an industrial unit located in Patalganga on December 12. The Karnala bird sanctuary too is under threat. Villagers have accused this company of burying the carcasses of these casualties in pits dug using the company JCB. The village panchayat has demanded strict action and cancellation of licence of the polluting units.

The company allegedly refused entry to forest department officials who wanted to conduct an inspection of their premises. However, said the official, forest department staff will go inside the company premises to conduct a panchnama of the carcasses and the company will have to face action.

Manikgad hill, near Karnala Fort and Patalganga, has thick forest cover. The forest is home to animals like barking deer, wild boar, monkeys, mongoose, rabbits, monitor lizards, peacock and other fauna. The foraging monkeys often venture downhill, into human habitat, unaware of the threats posed by industrial units.
