Mayor Anjani Bhoir did not take up the commissioner’s proposal for the establishment of a Nature Awareness Centre by A K Rural Development Trust at Gavlidevi Hills in Ghansoli. The proposal has been put on hold at present. The proposal the Commissioner bought to the general body proposed that the centre at Gavlidev was to be managed as per a tripartite agreement between NMMC, forest department and A K Rural Development Trust. Several corporators and citizens have frequently voiced the need of developing the Gavlidevi Hills into an eco tourism destination. Hence the decision to develop a Nature Awareness Centre for creating awareness about environment, wildlife and nature with the help of non-government organization working in this field was taken. But the mayor’s refused to put up the matter for the general body’s approval. The proposal does not place the credential of the proposed NGO on record but informs that the assistant conservator of Forests, Thane suggested that A K Rural Development Trust had the expertise in the agricultural and forest plantations fields. The administrations failure to invite NGO’s through public advertisements and selecting an NGO merely on the recommendation of a forest official leaves room for suspicion and justification of the mayor’s setting aside a worthy proposal.
