A German national doctor was fined Dh10 000 after five years for permanently damaging the shoulder of a new born girl during her delivery. The parents of the five year old girl had filed a case against the doctor in which they had stated that because of the doctor’s unprofessional attitude and improper medical action had resulted in the damage. Knowing very well that the baby was overweight the doctor should have operated using C-section method but instead she opted for a normal delivery. And when the baby got stuck because of the size, the doctor pulled her forcefully because of which she broke one of her shoulder blade. The incident was informed to the mother by one of the nurse after six hours. When confronted the doctor assured her that the wound would heal itself within time. But even after five years and several surgeries the arm has not healed. The parents are seeking Dh20100 as temporary compensation whereas they had demanded Dh23 million from the doctor as well from the hospital jointly, for the damage they had done to their daughter.
The doctor who had appealed against the verdict stating that she had given proper medical care to both the mother and daughter has lost the case as she would have to pay Dh10 000 to the mother, for beginners. Kiran Kidwai – International Desk, NMTV
