The state government is seriously considering making identity cards mandatory for citizens. Home minister Jayant Patil stated at the first meeting of the 66-member internal Security Council constituted by chief minister Ashok Chavan after the 26/11 strikes that identity cards should be made mandatory for citizens. Though the Centre will take a final call, the state government is considering the same. Ashok Chavan outlined the format of the council at the meeting. The council has been divided into five sub-committees so that it doesn’t become a talking shop. While one committee will be the security think-tank, others will be handling intelligence, disaster management, cyber crime and public awareness and communication. Chavan said the government will take the suggestions of the committees seriously. Their purpose was effective communication between the government and people, he said. Bureau report – NMTV News.
