Brushing aside criticism of his tenure, which saw the 26/11 attacks, Kwaja Hasan Gafoor, who was removed as Mumbai Police Commissioner, said his stint was “very challenging” and maintained that he and the force had acted to their best ability during the terror strike. Khwaja Hasan Gafoor has been posted as Managing Director of Police Housing Corporation in the rank of DGP. An Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of the 1974 batch, Gafoor took the charge of Mumbai Police Commissioner on March 1, 2008. The promotion of Hasan Gafoor raised the obvious question of the failure of the police department during the 26/11 attack. On the question of whether he was rather transferred than promoted to a much low profile job than what he had earlier, Hasan Gafoor stated that his promotion was due. On Pradhan Committee report which reportedly indicted him for lapses in handling November 26 terror attacks, Gafoor said that he had not seen the report. He pointed out that there were many improvements made in the police department post the attack which included purchasing of new equipments. Chief Minister Ashok Chavan also spoke with the media informing that Hasan Gafoor was not removed but promoted. Gafoor had earlier been in the Traffic Department and won two international awards during his tenure as Deputy Police Commissioner and Additional Commissioner.
