HIGH COURT BLASTS MHADA AND MCGM ILLEGAL CONSTRUCTIONS AT JUHU

Illegal constructions that dot Andheri-Versova-Jogeshwari belt – known to house many Bollywood starlets and production houses – have come under the scanner of the Mumbai high court. A city-based NGO has approached the high court seeking directions to the MCGM and MHADA to demolish what it calls rampant unauthorised constructions in the area. A division bench of Justice stated that if the authorities are not inclined to use their regulatory powers, they should be stripped of such powers. In its affidavit, the MCGM accepted the problem and said that the “occupiers have extended the structures both horizontally and vertically without authorisation”. On its part, MHADA too passed the buck back to the civic body, pointing out in its affidavit that under the Maharashtra Regional Town Planning Act, it was the duty of the planning authority, in this case the BMC, to demolish illegal structures.
