HIGH COURT ORDER CAN NOW SEAL THE FATE OF OTHER VIOLATERS

The High Court decision in the D Mart Case can now seal the fate of other malls and shopping complexes changing plans and parking rules for their commercial benefits. The NMMC is gearing up to use the orders as a weapon to attack other violators, reports Rajeev Mishra. Violating norms in the books from the word go – that’s what malls and commercial complexes do and much to their delight even get away with it. Till date many complexes have illegally converted parking areas into commercial units and have even evaded action for the violations. But may be now, not for long. NMMC Commissioner Vijay Nahata is keen that the high court ruling in D Mart proved that the NMMC was headed in the right direction and action on other violators will be taken in due course of time. One mall that tops the list of violators who have so far managed to escape action despite severe violations is Center One Mall at Vashi. The mall has encroached on the fire exits, violates safety norms and allegedly uses the basement for unauthorized purposes but despite bringing this to the attention of NMMC officials, no action has ever been taken against the grave violations. The other popular violators are Hotel Supreme Heritage, Wonder Wood, Sony World, Furniture Mall, Hotel Blue Diamond, Essenza and Hotel Amol. Unless shown favoritism, these big names should be on NMMC list next for violations proving that all are the same in the eyes of the law.
