Consumption of meat and pork in the city could become expensive in the near future. MCGM has decided to increase charges for services for slaughtering animals at the Deonar abattoir manifold, in order to compensate for losses being made by the abattoir. The bulk sellers, who will have to bear the burden of the hike in charges, will pass it on to those selling mutton and pork from licensed outlets, who in turn could be expected to pass the burden onto the consumers. MCGM has been running the facility at the abattoir, while making an annual loss of Rs5 crore to Rs6 crore. To catch up on the losses, it has now decided to revise the fees charged as entry fees, transportation fees, and charges for keeping these animals till they are slaughtered. The charges, which were last revised in 2001, have been increased by over 50% for most of the categories.
