July 24 is celebrated as the ‘Income Tax Day’ as this tax was first levied as a duty on this day in the year 1860 and the authority to levy it came into force on July 24 of that year. A country-wide ‘taxpayer e-assistance campaign’ was launched by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman to mark the 159th ‘Income Tax Day’ celebrations in the capital. The campaign that has been conceptualised by the CBDT was launched across all regional offices of the Income Tax Department. The income tax department in Mumbai celebrated Income Tax Day with events to create awareness among citizens along with easing process of filing income tax with various initiatives and also a cultural event.
CELEBRATIONS BEGIN ON A GREEN NOTE
The celebrations started on a green note with a tree plantation drive that started at the hands of Principal Chief Commissioner of Income Tax, Mumbai S K Gupta.
STREET PLAY TO CREATE AWARENESS
The Mumbai Income Tax department also organized street plays to create awareness about e-sahyog.
AAYAKAR SEVA KENDRA TO GIVE SUPPORT AND ASSISTANCE TO TAXPAYERS
Principal Chief Commissioner of Income Tax, Mumbai S. K. Gupta also inaugurated the Aayakar Seva Kendra along with the launch of “Kardaata e-Sahyog Abhiyaan.” The department will endeavour to assist and support taxpayers and other stakeholders in enabling them to e-file their returns and discharge other tax-related obligations.
“RESOLVE TAXPAYER’S GRIEVANCES IN FRAMEWORK OF LAW”
In a cultural event organized later in the day, the Principal Commissioner of Income Tax, Mumbai S K Gupta advised all commissioners, assistant commissioners and officials to ensure that citizens, especially the youth, should be encouraged to become a part of the nation building exercise through paying their taxes. He urged them to address grievances, resolves taxpayers’ woes but in the framework of law. A felicitation ceremony was organized for winners of the competitions organized by the department for youth across cities and colleges in outreach programs and acknowledge role of tax payers and other stakeholders.

The cultural program organized included performances by noted singer Kailash Kher and comedian Raju Srivastava.
INCOME TAX COMMISSIONERS URGE PEOPLE TO JOIN THE CLEAN MONEY MOVEMENT FOR NATION BUILDING
In a conversation with NMTV, the Chairman of the Organizing Committee and Commissioner of Income Tax, Mumbai Rakesh Bhaskar said that they want to make people aware of how important their contributions are. He said that tax payers can find all assistance they need under the e-sahyog abhiyaan. Commissioner of Income Tax, Mumbai Rupinder Brar said that the day’s celebrations also mark a moment to introspect of how they can serve the people better.
She added that they want to change their perception of being an enforcement agency to being one that encourages voluntary compliance of taxes.
