NMMC contractor Ashwini Infra Development Pvt. Ltd. has again come in the eye of controversy. Highly placed sources in NMMC inform NMTV News that the contractor who has been awarded the Rs. 90 Crore NMMC HQ project has been asked to stop work after it was found that he was using poor quality sand for making of the HQ building. While NMMC administration is denying this report, a visit to the HQ site indeed shows that work has come to a grinding halt. Looks like the jinx that has always surrounded the NMMC HQ project, has come back to haunt it as the work on the civic head office has been reportedly stalled. It may be recalled that the contract to construct the NMMC HQ work has been awarded to Ashwini Infra Development Pvt. Ltd. at a whopping cost of Rs. 90 Crores. It’s not been even a year and the project seems to have come to a grinding halt. The reason – well highly placed sources in NMMC inform NMTV News that the contractor has been ordered to stop work after it came to light that he was using poor quality sand for the construction of the project. The construction of the new NMMC headquarters building in Belapur has been temporarily stalled due to non- availability of good quality sand. The High Court banned sand mining in the state from September 24 but the contractor Ashwini Infra Development Pvt. Ltd. allegedly was using poor quality sand much before the ban exposing that the contractor is doing sub standard or even poor quality work at the site. Experts say that the rampant use of low-grade sand could pose a serious threat for the NMMC HQ project in the long run. At NMMC, City Engineer Mohan Dagaonkar outright refuses that work on the HQ project has been stalled. However a visit at the site, tell a completely different story. There are hardly any labours at the site with very little work that can be seen being done at the site. Senior journalist Vishwarath Nayar confirms the reports that the contractor Ashwini Infra Development Pvt. Ltd. has been ordered to stop work on NMMC HQ due to poor quality of sand that was being used in the project. He says that projects like the HQ building of a municipal corporation should be planned for atleast a 100 years, but any construction in Navi Mumbai lasts only for 30 years. With the High Court banning sand mining, the chances of using poor quality substitutes to sand has increased. He says that at the NMMC HQ project site, it is can be seen that in fact the contractor Ashwini Infra Development Pvt. Ltd. has used low quality sand. Now it remains to be seen what action NMMC plans to take against the contractor Ashwini Infra Development Pvt. Ltd. if he has in fact used poor quality sand. If NMMC ignores the mistake of the contractor it will set the wrong precedent for other contractors of NMMC. Besides, this – the NMMC HQ is not only a prestigious project but also will also seen scores of citizens visiting the civic body every day. In the contractor Ashwini Infra Development Pvt. Ltd. has used poor quality sand to rush through the project it will endanger the NMMC HQ and put the scores of lives at risk as well. With bureau inputs, Sana Warsia for NMTV News.
