Kharghar police has secured a transfer warrant to take into custody the main accused in the Vashi dacoity case for her role in a ₹1-crore cheating case.
Police inspector Devidas Sonawane said. “We expect to secure Anita Mhasane’s custody on Saturday. We will interrogate her to know what she did with Rs 1 crore in demonetised notes that a woman had handed over to the accused after she promised to give her new notes in exchange.”
So far, six accused have been arrested in the case and more four are on the run. The accused’s husband Mukund and son Ankit were recently arrested in connection with the cheating case. Mukund is a constable attached to Khandeshwar police station.
On Thursday night, the police arrested Mahesh alias Manoj Kamlakar Suravkar (52) and Sunil Tukaram Korde (46), both real estate agents from Dombivali; and Shashank Gopal Tawade (57), an assistant sub inspector at the Thane police headquarters and a resident of Badlapur. Mr. Sonawane said that Ms. Mhasane was the mastermind of the cheating case and had promised 5% of the loot to each of the 10 accused.
Prakash Nilewad, Assistant Commissioner of Police (Panvel), said: “ASI Tawade was Ms. Mhasane’s friend and not her husband’s. We suspect that all 10 accused deposited the 10,000 notes in the ₹1,000 denomination that the complainant had handed over to Ms. Mhasane and they deposited it into separate bank accounts and withdrew it later.” Mr. Nilewad said that they had not yet recovered the swindled money and expected to get leads about it after securing Ms. Mhasane’s custody.
The accused arrested on Thursday night were presented before the Panvel court on Friday and have been remanded in police custody till November 28.
