KIRIT SOMAIYYA DEMANDS ENQUIRY CHIEF MINISTER SPENDING MORE THAN HIS INCOME FOR PROMOTIONS DURING POLL

The BJP has met the Chief Election Commissioner and demanded that the Chief Minister’s election be declared invalid for this. Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan’s statement on poll expenditure has triggered a row. A report that the CM’s claim of spending merely Rs 5,379 on newspaper advertisements and Rs 6,000 on television advertisements are seen as under reporting if seen in the light of the mega publicity Chief Minister Ashok Chavan got in the media during his poll campaign. While Congress downplayed it, saying it did not call for knee-jerk reactions, the BJP went at the CM hammer and tongs, demanding a probe. Addressing a press conference, BJP leader Kirid Somaiya informed that they are demanding the Ashok Chavan’s election from his constituency be declared invalid. He said that the Chief Minister Ashok Chavan had spent more than the permitted limits in his constituency during assembly polls. The party has asked the Election Commission to order a high-level inquiry into the issue. Kirid Somaiya stated that Ashok Chavan had spent in lakhs for media advertisements. Somaiya informed that he has collected 47 sheets of the Chief Minister’s print advertisements in “The Hindu” newspaper. The BJP has submitted a memorandum to him, alleged that Ashok Chavan had violated the Representation of the People Act by furnishing false information to the Election Commission.
