LABOR MINISTER GANESH NAIK ADVOCATES MORE TIMINGS FOR SHOPS

shop-1If the State Labour Minister Ganesh Naik has his way, you would be able to shop till 11 pm. The Senior NCP leader wants to amend the existing Bombay Shops and Establishments Act, 1948, which prohibits shops from remaining open after 8.30 pm. The demand to allow shops and commercial establishments in the city to remain open beyond 8.30 pm came from traders who met Ganesh Naik at Mantralaya. A similar proposal was mooted in 2004 by the then labour minister and NCP leader Nawab Malik who had sought an amendment to the act to enable them to stay open for 24 hours. However, Malik’s proposal failed to find favour with senior NCP leader and deputy chief minister R R Patil. Keeping this in mind, Ganesh Naik is treading his way carefully and has invited objections and suggestions from the home, law and judiciary department, the MCGM and various other departments on this matter. He further added that the proposal is approved, then it will be initiated in Mumbai on an experiment basis before being implemented in other cities. Bureau report NMTV
