Sand dredging on a large have been reported from Mumbra. The Tehsildar’s office, TMC and the local police sized machines worth Rs 3 crore that was being used for sand dredging here. Nearly 48 trucks came under the hammer of the department. Our correspondent Manoj Singh reports on the growing activities of sand dredging in this region. It may be noted that the creek off the coast of Mumbra and Diva is the haven for sand thieves. Several rackets are operating in the area right under the nose of the district administration. Several incident of such illegal sand mining in the creek have been reported by officials of the district collector. The local police of the area have seized trucks and suction pumps in two cases last year itself but seems like unlawful sand dredging is far from over. A recent case of illegal sand dredging near Chuha bridge in Mumbra was reported at the district collector’s office. The Tehsildar’s office, TMC and local police raided the site early morning and caught 48 trucks. While the truck drivers were set free by collecting a fine of Rs 13000 each, the department seized two proclane machines, 2 labor boats and 7 suction pumps. The machines worth Rs 3 crore were seized.
