The entire nation has witnessing a historic revolution – a mass movement that is being compared across the world to the pre-independence movement for freedom initiated by the father of the nation. As the fever grips citizens across ages, regions, religions and states; we bring to you all the action from Mumbai. Take a look at how Mumbai joined the nation to support team Anna’s campaign against corruption.
• ANTI – CORRUPTION DAHI HANDI
As an Anna wave sweeps the city, dahi handi got a touch of the prevailing ‘anti-corruption’ mood. Anti-corruption campaigner Anna Hazare’s supporters in Mumbai organised an ‘anti-corruption dahi handi’ campaign to extend support to civil society’s version of draft Jan Lokpal Bill. Children broke the pot of corruption as a symbolic gesture showing how anti-corruption has become a prominent theme.
• DABBAWALAS BREAK 120 YEAR OLD TRADITION TO SUPPORT ANNA
Mumbai’s dabbawalas have decided to step up and join the wave of support for the anti-corruption crusader Anna Hazare. Breaking their 120-year-long tradition of delivering dabbas for the first time, the dabbawalas went on strike this week. More than 5,000 dabbawalas took part in a rally from Mumbai’s Churchgate station to Azad Maidan, both in South Mumbai. They raised slogans that freedom fighters used during freedom for independence that have become symbolic of the mass movements against corruption being witnessed all over the nation.
• LAWYERS JOIN THE FRAY
After students, office goers and dabbawalas, lawyers were next to join the Anna Hazare bandwagon. They gathered to protest at Azad Maidan.
• BJP CASHES ON WAVE AGAINST GOVERNMENT, SUPPORTS TEAM ANNA
The public protest against the arrest of anticorruption crusader Anna Hazare has given the BJP an opportunity to cash in on the anti-government wave seen across the nation.
• “BRING DOWN THE GOVERNMENT” SAYS UDDHAV THACKAREY
With Anna Hazare receiving worldwide support to protest against the UPA government and its corruption, the opposition was bound to jump and attack the government. Recently, Shiv Sena Executive President Uddhav Thackarey in a recent press conference held in Mumbai, condemned the government’s decision to arrest Anna Hazare instead of carrying out talks with him.
Shiv Sena executive president Uddhav Thackeray blasted the centre for creating an ’emergency-like’ situation in the country adding that all the opposition parties must unite and bring down this government.
