Prior to Diwali, if the proposal set forth by MCGM is accepted by the Workers Union, then very soon the wages of its cleaning workers would be equal to that of the 4th grade employees of the central government. MCGM’s Diwali offer for its cleaning workers however is not being accepted by the Workers Union. For the same the worker’s union along MCGM are trying to come to a mutual decision. Speaking during a press conference, MCGM Commissioner Dr. Jairaj Pathak informed that in its said proposal, MCGM cleaning workers would have the benefit of earning on the same pay scale as that of the fourth grade employees of the Central government. However, the OWrkers Union are demanding a pay scale qquivilant to that of the clerks at tehe Centre government which the Commissioner thinks is uncaled for. However, looking at the way MCGM Commissioner has been talking about the proposal, it is most likely that the Workers Union would accept the same and the city’s cleaning workers can take the benefit of new wages effective from April 2005. This monsoon season has taken a huge toll on human life with monsoon ailments taking lives of around 39 people in the month of September. As per MCGM records of the past four months, around 170 residents have died due to monsoon ailments. The most common ailments were malaria and leptospyrosis.
